The Five Elements

五行 · Wǔxíng

Everything in a BaZi chart is made of five elemental energies:Wood (木), Fire (火),Earth (土), Metal (金) andWater (水). They are not “stuff” — they are qualities of movement, season and relationship.

The nourishing cycle (相生)

Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water (condensation), Water grows Wood. This is the creationcycle — each element supports the next, like seasons turning.

The controlling cycle (相克)

Wood parts Earth (roots), Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood. This is the control cycle — each element checks another, keeping the system in balance.

Five seasons in the calendar

In the Chinese calendar the elements map to the year itself:

Reading the balance

In your chart, each of the eight characters carries an element. Some readers count how many of each element you have, give weight to the Day Master’s element, and ask: what supports me, what drains me, what do I manage, and what presses on me?

The Da Yun chapters we show you change this balance over time — a decade of Water feels different from a decade of Fire, even for the same person. That is why the same person can read very different decades as life unfolds.

See your own element balance — the chart page shows a live count of all five elements.
