Repeated & Opposed Pillars

Some of the most famous moments in a BaZi reading are not clashes or combines at all — they are mirrors. When a Da Yun or a passing year uses the same characters as one of your four birth pillars, readers call it Repeated Pillar (伏吟, fú yín). When it uses the exact opposite — same element for the stem, opposite branch, or a full reversal — it is Opposed Pillar (反吟, fǎn yín). Two of the most primal events a chart can experience, and both, frankly, overhyped.

Repeated Pillar: the echo (伏吟)

Picture a decade whose stem-and-branch pair is identical to one of your natal pillars — your Day Pillar 乙巳 meeting a 乙巳 year, say. The moment is read as an echo: the year or decade restages the theme of that pillar with full volume. A child is born and the parent's chart lights up; a period arrives that reopens the topic of your Day Pillar — your body, your partnership, your core identity.

Traditional notes call the echo "heavy": it concentrates everything the pillar holds into one season. But concentration is not curse. When the echo lands on a well-supported pillar, it is a spotlight, not a weight — a year in which who you are becomes unusually visible and unusually consequential.

Opposed Pillar: the reversal (反吟)

The reversal pattern uses the pillar's opposite on the wheel — a 乙巳 pillar meeting 己亥, or the branch clashing outright (巳 meets 亥). Readers read it as upheaval of the theme: the stable identity of that pillar shaken, converted, redirected. A spouse palace reversal in a decade deals in partnership change; a year-pillar reversal often shows up as big moves — relocation, rebuilding, a turn of the page.

Why the engine flags them

This is personal to BaZi Compass: our chart page deliberately scans every Da Yun and the passing years for these two patterns — plus the branch clashes that accompany them — and lights them up as signals inside each decade. The reason is not fear. It is that both patterns are objectively detectable and highly tradable as narrative hooks: a mirror event gives a reading something concrete to point at. What nobody can honestly do is assign them a fixed consequence.

Read the mirror, ignore the scare

The underlying charts in our own database show both patterns with perfect regularity — the 1995 example's 亥-巳 branch clash, for instance, is exactly the kind of pairing that lights up under a reversed or clashing year. The traditional lore is entertaining and worth knowing; the practical rule is simpler: a mirror year is a year of focus. Whatever theme the pillar carries comes to the front of the queue. How it resolves is written by the rest of the chart — and by you.
